Winners Announced For Thyssen Krupp Elevator Architecture Award 2008/09

First Prize: Dubai Frame by Fernando Donis (Netherlands)

In August 2008, Dubai Municipality and Thyssen Krupp Elevator announce the launch of a International, open, single stage, public, anonymous, preliminary design competition for the conception of a tall emblem structure, to promote the new face of Dubai.
In conformity with the UIA-UNESCO regulations for international competitions, the competition has been approved by the UIA.

Located within the Za’abeel Park, the structure should promote tourism, have a unique state of the art design, include cultural and leisure activities, conference and theater facilities. Local climatic conditions should be taken into account, as well as urban and landscape aspects, passive construction principles should be applied and the structure should respond to the seismic constraints of the region.

The winners of the XI edition of the Thyssen Krupp Elevator Architecture Award were announced yesterday.

2967 teams, consisting of 4651 architects from 106 countries, registered for the competition. 926 total projects were received by the deadline.

The winners are:

First Prize: Dubai Frame by Fernando Donis (Netherlands):

First Prize // Dubai Frame // Fernando Donis // 2

Dubai is a city full of emblems, Rather than adding another one, we propose to frame them all: to frame the city. Rather than building a massive structure, the purpose of this project is to build a void. This void of 150 meters by 105 meters will continuously frame the development of the current and future Dubai.

Second Prize: Magic Mirror by Luo Siwei (China):

Second Prize // Magic Mirror // Luo Siwei

Second Prize // Magic Mirror // Luo Siwei // 2

The magic mirror we design is a twisted cirque structure, which is 160 meters in diameter. We set some kind of special fountain system and specialized water equipment system in the cirque, which can turn water into rain, snow, fog, Lunt and hailstone that is to perform several kinds of weather phenomena. The magic mirror can rotate in 360 degrees, which can bring all the view around into the frame.

Third Prize (tied): The Flying Colors of Dubai by Hongbo Lu (Canada):

Third Prize (tied) // The Flying Colors of Dubai // Hongbo Lu // 1

Third Prize (tied) // The Flying Colors of Dubai // Hongbo Lu // 2

Third Prize (tied): Big Beam by Marta Pozo (France) & Ferrán Yusta (Netherlands):

sorry! but i don’t see any innovation or creativity in these work. come on! what is so new in the frame. Nothing has been add to the park or to the city, nothing especial. this frame can be anywhere. and the same comment with the others.
    It is so disappointing.

sorry! but i don’t see anything special here. 2967 teams come on!

It is in our hands to stop this nonsense! This year edition of thyssenkrupp award was described as a huge success.
We should leave a clear statement to thyssenkrupp award organization and others that we appreciate the opportunity that is given to all of us, but our work should be respected and compared following the brief competition requirements available to all.
Otherwise, in some years architecture competitions will be insanely useless and a huge time/money black hole.
Because we care about this, and the world needs REAL ARCHITECTURE, we should leave a clear statement. If we don’t participate in the next editions there will be a clear message, I think.

    Jorge Luis Borges had this sentence;
Reality doesn’t have the minimum obligation to be interesting but fiction does.

If we consider the winning proposal as being on a fictional context (due to its clear unfeasibility)
we have to consider that it is not very interesting.

I think we should create a public gallery were we can post our fictional and interesting version of the winning proposal.

Even if you don’t have hands!!!! You will be able to do better renders using only your feet!!!

    UNPROFESSIONAL!

  4. Theferds says:

I think this should remind us the depth of Architecture, I agree with the winners idea of instead of creating another landmark he just simply framed it. maybe it is not what most of us has expected, but we are not in the period where we need another monumental landmark in which Dubai is already very richly have.

  5. jmz says:

I think instead of adding another comment- as we already have so many, I’ll just leave a void. This will simply “frame” the debate as to whether this is an absurd fraud or not.

  6. Kyoko says:

cheungvogl lectured in tokyo some days ago, mentioning this design besides:
    http://cheungvogl.com/7point7.htm

    it is amazing!
cheungvogl are for sure one of the rising stars of architecture!

the website: http://www.cheungvogl.com – you will find some of their current projects in Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, etc. – stunning!

  7. Paul T. Tan says:

Sorry I agree with Lu on May 9th, so what is so innovative about the frame. And the question than becomes, is the view of Dubai from Zaabel Park really worth framing, if yes til when ??? We’ve all seen cities in the world that is worth framing …….

I thought the solution required by the brief should be “timeless”. In a few months people will say “so What”. This “new face of Dubai” – “tall emblem” – is not the same as the Vietnam War Memorial by Maya Ling in Washington !!! I am a great admirer of that …. What an anti-climax this competition has been ….. Sorry Thyssen Krupp, I dont think this one has done you guys any good.

  8. Kyoko says:

as any competition, this competition must be according to the law (in doubt dubai or international). that means, in order that the jury decision is agreed to be valid, ALL jury members have to be present.
there is no explanation or reason named, why 3 major jury memmbers are not part of the jury – it is not clear, if from the beginning or during the decision process.
thyssenkrupp lacks any notification, announcement or justification.
the final decision is not justified in any comment, nor any declaration is made how the winner could succeed without providing the rquierd information as indicated in the brief (contract).
if thyssenkrupp does not agree with this dubious and surprising result, it should set a sign in form of a statement or letting go of the head of the jury, Javier del Pozo Portillo, Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Business Unit Southern Europe, Africa & Middle East.
in any means, thyssenkrupp can’t possibly want this competition to appear as a transfer of an enourmous amount of money to a ‘friend’, avoiding taxes, as competition wins are usually tax-free or low-tax (according to the law as stated above).
some questions seem to be too interesting, not to be answered in a court….

I have the same feeling. I’m just a simple person but all comes down to money, it is just terrible.

  9. Milo says:

Wow, looks like a lot of disapointed and bitter architects out there. Well I’m not an architect, but I do appreciate good form and stucture, and I have to say almost all of the designs that placed are really stupid looking. What a farce.

    best regards

  11. In short, architects have to be a great deal far more than just plain architects.

  12. Denise says:

I agree with you, the frame brings our creativity to touch an unlimited space, where we can then create ourselves according to what the landscape give at that precision time. Therefore is an art work of time and emotion that each one of us will experience at a precise moment. It is timeless and represents each one experience. (comment on First Prize)

I love the mirror and colors as well because it reflects and is color but still the first prize is boundless.

If you are an artist best of luck, the best of all is be there, involved in the motion of the world and involved to create a space for all.
