Uni-Diversity – Coexistence in Architecture

Project by: Arch. Rami Kopty and Arch. Judi Nashashibi. Technion Institute of Technology – Israel.
The project deal with Nazareth metropolis , trying to create a wide connection between Nazareth and Nazareth illit.
In the project the two cities are examined typology’s as you can see in this diagram and get a connection between them in many fields such as: the green typology, the openness of the materials, activities in the areas, the meeting scale, formality of a place and materials… these diagrams shows the deference and the connection between Nazareth and Nazareth illit, and helped them creating the university spaces by making a superposition of all layers on…
They decided to take the university which is one of many points being planned in the master plane to examine it architecturally. The complex includes: tram station connecting both cities and gives an answer to the traffic problem in Nazareth city, a shopping area, cafe/restaurants area, university with public library, reading gardens, Media walk, 3 Auditoriums, community center and Park.
The Aim of the Project is to reach a coexistence in the Whole area we are examining at Nazareth metropolis (Israel) the area contain: city of Nazareth which the citizens are Arab (Christians and Muslims) and the city of Nazareth illit which its majority are Jewish. Today these two neighbor cities are disconnected from each other and have no interaction between them.
After examining the whole area it was founded that the movement between the cities are much complicated and is not offering the people a dynamic transition from place to place which cause Nazareth City to be much trafficked in the day and not allowing the people around to use it and to enjoy it properly. Therefore a way to connect both cities by a public transportation was founded – Tram rail.. that connect both cities center and all along this circle we added a building and landscape functions such as: park, gallery’s, shopping centers, piazza, museum, hi-tech offices and a UNIVERSITY.
It was decided to take the university as an example for the project and to develop it with its spaces and architectural values using the term “Coexistence in Architecture” that was defined from the research.
The complex contain a university and its labs and offices, a shopping area that contain a tram stations, cafes and restaurants, public place for multi use that contain a community center and auditoriums that can be used for both the public and the university depends on their needs in such a time…
Sustainability: since our site is an old Quarry we used the walls as interior of the complex (thermal mass) and shown to all. A new green mass in front that contain gardens and public spaces that also function as shading element (green to the environment), acoustic wall, green parks that all together aim to a greener place and green architecture…
