Toyo Ito Designed A Sea Wave Facade In Barcelona
Japanese architect Toyo Ito recently transformed this facade of a luxurious 41 apartment building in Barcelona, Spain. The architect was inspired in ‘La Pedrera’ from Gaudi that lies across the street. Toyo was initially reluctant to do the project but when he went up to the rooftop, seeing La Pedrera lit up made an impression on him. Ito admitted he had fallen in love with Gaudí’s work during a visit to Barcelona on his honeymoon.
Its facade, central core and interior patios were all designed by the prestigious Japanese architect, winner of the Golden Lion award at the 8th Venice Bienniale International Architecture Exhibition in 2002, the RIBA Gold Medal in 2006 and the 6th Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and Arts in 2008.
The rest of the building was designed by the architects Carlos Bassó and Toni Olaya on what was hitherto an office block.

Fantastic!!!
Gaudi on ther side. Great “combo” Gaudi vs “new Gaudiism”.
Great work Toyo Ito!
Wow- looks great- contextually cool compared to Gaudi across the street while sharing proportions with its neighbors!
