The World // Dubai // UAE // MAD
This is a design in-progress by Beijing-based architectural design studio MAD.
The 20, 358 sqm artificial island is located in Dubai and will be a luxury hotel. The following description is from the architects:
‘Situated within the luxurious and (in)famous development in Dubai, named ‘The World’, the site of island D-76, or Tokyo Island epitomizes the richness of both the natural environment, and the new-found, globalized wealth of Dubai.
This richness permeates through the entire environment, extending even to the sea bed itself, where one of the most beautiful creatures of the underwater world can be found: Coral. This sculptural plant grows by spreading itself out as wide as possible along the ocean floor, to receive a maximum amount of sunlight. Adjusting and transforming its shape to the surrounding environment, finally the Coral merges into the environment itself. This simple and basic principle of natural behavior creates a beautiful and complex ecological world, and provides a model of how man-made interventions can best co-exist with nature.
The key elements that combine to make the Ocean Resort attractive are its wonderful views and the recreational activities afforded by the coastline. To maximize these two aspects, the same ecological behavior of Coral was employed as the design concept for Tokyo Island, in order to create one of the most innovative and outstanding ocean resorts of the 21st century.
Spreading the main residential spaces as far as possible, locating them at the plot boundary line, provides an immense view for every unit. Elevating the main volume of the structure above ground level provides a canopy for the beach areas, creating a shaded area that moves with the sun, allowing a much wider range of activities to take place on the beach. Continuous, non-linear paths weave across the island, beneath the structures, to enhance and elongate the beach coastline.
Now, with D76 Tokyo Island, a world-class residential community will coexist with the outstanding opulence of nature.’
