The Lantern // Sandnes // Norway // Atelier Oslo

Description

The ‘Lantern’ is a structure that covers an outdoor space in Lang Street, Sandnes. The basis for the project was to have a overcover that could be used in many different contexts, from concerts and Torghandel to an informal meeting in the city. ‘Lantern’ was a Norwegian Wood project, in conjunction with the culture year in Stavanger / Sandnes 2008, and it was a premise to build environmentally friendly and use three in all parts of the construction.

Intensjoner Intended

In the ‘Lantern’, we have interpreted husformen, which already exists in the old wooden environment in Lang Street. A transparent roof in wood and glass, is held up by 4 søyleknipper. To give the roof a light and abstract terms, has all the elements in the roof the same dimensions, so that they are perceived without the primary and secondary bæring. The columns split out of the ceiling to distribute the load of the roof surface construction and down to the ground to stabilize the power. The columns are moved during construction, so they are protected.

This is also done to erase the distinction between covered and not covered outdoor space. Nothing’s on the ground indicate when you are covered. We do not want the roof of the structure should define the place, but the floor space in itself. The columns are positioned so that the room is informal, and facilitate informal ways to experience the project. The project is lit so that it appears as a lantern in the evening.
