OMA & Urbanus Win Shenzhen Crystal Island Competition

Winner // Shenzhen Crystal Island Competition // China // OMA & Urbanus // 1

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), in collaboration with Shenzhen-based architects Urbanus, has been awarded first prize in the design competition for a major new cultural center, transport hub, and public landmark in the heart of the city of Shenzhen, southern China. The design, led by OMA partner Ole Scheeren, was selected from 32 entries by an international jury.

The scheme builds on Shenzhen’s newly acquired status of ‘City of Design’, awarded by UNESCO in 2008, and proposes for the city’s Crystal Island project the formation of ‘Shenzhen Creative Center’: a focal point for the city’s creative industries in front of Shenzhen’s iconic city hall.

Mecanoo Architecten To Design A Masterplan For The New Business Center For Longgang, Shenzhen

Shenzhen is one of the fastest growing cities in China. In the last 20 years, it has grown from a fishing village to the richest city in the country with a population of 14 million. Together with Hong Kong this area is slowly but surely transforming into a world metropolis in terms of economy and population and will soon be among the top-5 in the world. Due to the shortage of construction sites in Shenzhen, Longgang has become the fastest growing district adjacent to the city. Mecanoo Architecten has been requested to design a masterplan for the new Business Center for Longgang.

In December 2006, Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has won a competition to design the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in Shenzhen, China.

The 250m-high building will be OMA’s second biggest project in China after the vast CCTV building in Beijing, which is under construction.

Shenzhen International Airport Terminal 3 // China // Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas

In April 2008, Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas have won the competition to design a new terminal at Shenzen Bao’an International Airport in China.

The 400,000 square meter terminal will be built in three phases, with the final elements completed in 2035.

Steven Holl Architects Wins Masterplan In ‘Shenzhen 4 Tower In 1′ Competition

Steven Holl Architects have been selected as the winning firm for the design of the masterplan of the ‘Shenzhen 4 Tower in 1′ competition by unanimous decision.

This competition was for an office tower complex around the new Shenzhen Stock Exchange Headquarters located in Shenzhen’s Futian commercial business district. Steven Holl Architects’ design for the competition included four towers connected by a horizontal linking structure.
