
The City of Frederiksberg, Denmark, the Danish Foundation for Culture and Sport Facilities and Realdania recently announced the winners of the ‘House of Culture and Movement’ competition in Frederiksberg.
The winning project is designed by MVRDV, Rotterdam, and ADEPT, Copenhagen, in a joint effort with SLA landscape architects, Søren Jensen engineers, Imitio, Winnie Ricken, Copenhagen, Max Fordham, London, and Ducks Scèno, Paris.
The building is a new urban typology with its mix of community center, exhibition and performance, playground, park and health center. The ‘House of Culture and Movement’ is aimed to engage the population of Frederiksberg in a healthy and active life style. The 4,000 m2 building is set in 4,500m2 public gardens and is the first in a series of 3 buildings. The first phase is to be completed in 2015 and has a total budget of 17 million Euro.

In 2003, MVRDV (NL) / a-lab (NO) / Dark architects (NO), won the competition for Oslo’s new waterfront development along Bjørvika with the design of the “BJØRVIKA BARCODE” for Oslo S Utvikling (OSU). a-lab has built the first building of the master plan, the Oslo Headquarters of PricewaterhouseCoopers – PWC in 2009.

MVRDV and Blanca Lleo have completed Celosia Residence a social housing block (near the Mirador building which was an earlier collaboration) in Madrid.
The large block is divided into thirty smaller, staggered blocks of apartments, creating communal patios throughout the building and allowing air and light to penetrate between the homes. The building includes 146 apartments.

Make It Right construction is underway in the Lower 9th Ward. The first 8 homes are completed and displaced Lower 9th Ward families impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Brad Pitt´s Make It Right Foundation has been working with a group of international architects to redevelop the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, after hurricane Katrina. The name of the foundation addresses the desire of Pitt, architecture enthusiast, to design these houses the best way and not just as a temporary solution, in a process that also included working not only with these renowned firms, but also very close with the community, with a focus on sustainable development.

On October 1st, 2008 the city of Almere has commissioned MVRDV to substantially deepen and develop the existing concept vision Almere 2030 that foresees a doubling in scale, new urban qualities and a strong identity for the new town outside Amsterdam. MVRDV will collaborate with a team of experts and the municipality on the programmatic and spatial long term planning for the fast growing city. Almere city councilor Adri Duivesteijn today opened the first work session. For the municipality Mr. Henk Meijer, project director for the structure vision oversees the project; for MVRDV its co-founder Mr. Winy Maas will be in charge of the project.

Construction has begun on a public library designed by Dutch firm MRVDV in Spijkenissse, the Netherlands.
Alongside the book collection and reading areas, the building will include commercial space, offices, an auditorium, conference rooms, and exhibition spaces.
These facilities will be stacked vertically, creating brick-clad terraces where the book collection will be displayed.
The books will be clearly visible from the outside through the glass shell, which also affords views over the town as visitors ascend the staircases that link the terraces.

MVRDV are a highly acclaimed Dutch practice that combine an interest in theory and research with building sustainable, challenging and often playful architecture. Among their most acclaimed works are the Dutch Pavilion at the Hanover World Expo 2000, the Silodam Housing complex in Amsterdam and a housing development in Ypenburg outside the Hague.
Living Architecture has asked a series of established and emerging world-class architects to build houses around the UK. The houses will be available to rent for holidays by the general public.
