The compressed straw house in Eschenz epitomises the experimental approach. The panels that make up the walls and partitions are filled with compacted straw, providing excellent low-cost, environmentally friendly and high-quality insulation. The extirior is additionally clad in translucent panels, which provide a view of the straw panels and give the wedge-shaped structure a futuristic sheen. The house’s simple formal structure focuses attention on the new materials, fulfilling the architect’s intention of seeking out new low-cost building methoda with broad apllications.
The house was completed in December 2005.
