Spacebox // Utrecht // The Netherlands // Mart de Jong

This project is a student housing in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

‘The building concept was designed in 2003 by Mart de Jong of design office De Vijf in Rotterdam based in the Netherlands. The technical development is done in 2004 by the company Holland Composites Industrials in Lelystad based in The Netherlands.

//Material

Panel specifications

Each unit is built up with 5 composite panels. Each panel consists of a fire resistant material, a Resol foam core and a very smooth polyester exterior finish. Total panel thickness is 88mm for walls and total panel thickness for floor and ceiling is 110mm.
Both panels and the total building system have been tested thoroughly according to the building regulations (Bouwbesluit) of The Netherlands.

Fire specifications

For our panels we use the safest possible materials. The panels have been thoroughly tested and meet the building regulations of the Bouwbesluit of the Netherlands.

Colours

We are able to produce Spacebox in any desired colour.
However, for projects in sunny climate we advise to use very light colours because of the risk of UV fade.

//Flexibility

The production method of the Spacebox system offers us much freedom of design.
In principle it is possible to realise a custom-made according to the wishes of the principal. Apart from this, it is possible to connect the units horizontally or vertically in any desired combination.
Also all internal build out elements such as kitchens and bathrooms can be designed according to the wishes of the principal.

Fast production

Spacebox units are produced completely turn key in a factory and assembled on site to form complete buildings. If neccesary we are able to produce and erect up to 10 units per day.

//Interior

The production method of the Spacebox system offers us much freedom of design.
In principle it is possible to realise a custom-made design according to the wishes of the principal. Apart from this, it is possible to connect the units horizontally or vertically in any desired combination. Also all internal build out elements such as kitchens and bathrooms can be designed according to the wishes of the principal.

//Sustainibility

With a minimum insulation rate of Rc = 3,5, up to Rc 4,2 Spacebox has an
excellent insulation rate.
These values implicate a remarkable lower energy waste than comparable unit building concepts.

Life expectation of units: 30-60 years, depending on specification.’

  1. Bouwbesluit says:

    This is a really nice concept. But the Fire-resistance rating is not tested according to the bouwbesluit but according the nen 6068.

  2. Statement – Spacebox® October 2009:

    Efectis Netherlands/TNO has recently tested the product “Spacebox”
    as documented in classifiction report 2009-Efectis-R0409. (And in additional test reports.) The testing documented good reaction-to-fire properties(brandvoortplanting).

    Information:
    Test procedures are now by CPD-legislation harmonized in the European Member States.
    As a result the National Dutch classification system acc. NEN 6065 is being replaced by a new European classification system.

    The obtained EN-classification as described in 2009-Efectis-R0409 is B, s1-d0. This is similar or better than the previous class 2 according NEN 6065.
