Solos: Tulou/ Affordable Housing For China
In the fifth installment of the Solos series, the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will present Tulou, a prototype for affordable housing currently being built in the city of Guangzhou by the Chinese architectural practice Urbanus.
For the exhibition at Cooper-Hewitt, Urbanus will display two full-scale bedrooms, with additional areas of the unit outlined on the gallery floor and walls, in order for visitors to fully experience the spatial interior.
The Solos series was launched in 2003 to showcase innovations in the fields of architecture and design, including designs new to the market or to construction or new design in the research and development stage.
In addition to normal residential programing, the Tulou complex also houses a dormitory, hotel, retail space, gym, library and a variety of communal and public spaces. The exhibition features photographs plans and two full-scale interior replicas.
The show will continue running until this Sunday, April 5th.
