Pictorial Report From The Havenstraatterrein // ARCAM // The Netherlands
The following text is from the ARCAM website:
‘Thrills abound in the Havenstraatterrein, an area the size of about ten football pitches, approximately halfway between Vondelpark and the Olympic Stadium, on the edge of Berlage’s Plan Zuid. Shortly after the beginning of the twentieth century, the construction of Haarlemmermeer station and the Havenstraat tram depot determined the fate of this site as an urban fringe area devoted to rail transport. In the thirties, coal storage depots and later all manner of informal-looking sheds and huts were built along the railway tracks, which ran via Aalsmeer to Hoofddorp. Most of those that are still standing are in use by small businesses and hobbyists.
In the near future, in all probability the structures in the southeastern corner of the site will be demolished in order to make way for the construction of a new headquarters for Oud Zuid district council. In connection with this proposal, the city’s planning department is working on a zoning plan for the area as a whole. The organization MOVE (Museum voor het Openbaar Vervoer) would like a public transport museum to be built here. Partly for this reason, it has asked the Rotterdam-based firms Christian Mueller Architects and Vitibuck Architects, and Merkator Locatie & Citymarketing, to draw up a development plan for the area. In all probability, the tram depot will remain where it is. The expectation is that the new council offices will be taken into use in 2013. It is as yet uncertain whether a museum will indeed be built on the site. All the signs are, however, that this frayed edge will not look as if it has gone largely unnoticed by the city and its inhabitants for very much longer.’
