Ordos 100: 8 Towers By Single Speed Design

SsD is among a group of 100 architects to design villas for the Ordos 100 project curated by Ai WeiWei and selected by Herzog and deMeuron.

Eight monolithic towers containing distinct programs deform to meet each other at different points. Organizing the program in this way creates experiential differences between rooms that are necessarily similar in size, while creating a high level of porosity within what is essentially a large house. It also permits greater efficiency, as only occupied towers need to consume energy.

Different zones of the home are used at different times of day. Dynamically adapting building systems to these patterns of use allows for greater energy-efficiency.
