Odenplan Atrium // Stockholm // Sweden // BIG

‘Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG – is a Copenhagen based group of 85 architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development.’
This is the architects’ winning entry for a competition to design a new retail and office complex in the city center of the Swedish capital Stockholm.
From BIG architects:
‘The Odenplan Atrium is a ca. 45.000m2 mixed use project planned between the Odenplan Square metro station and Stockholm’s Public Library designed by Erik Gunnar Asplund. The site is a link between the high speed motion of one of the cities busiest traffic points and quiet contemplation.

Surrounded by buildings stemming from the late 19th century, the building interprets the Swedish perimeter block by turning the courtyard into an atrium. The building’s form is driven by its adjacencies by opening up the view and the connection from the square to the library which will receive a new extension.

At the ground floor the building is pulled back giving space for an inviting plaza and a grand stair descending into the shopping passages that connects to Odenplan Square. Slowly evolving from a triangle shape at the ground floor to a square in the roof plan through each added floor, the building always keeps an optimum 16 meter floor width through an atrium that opens up the sky in the core of the building giving air and light to the office spaces.’
