Minister Intervenes Over Belfast Tower Plans

The Aurora building is a proposed construction project that if granted planning permission would dominate the Belfast skyline. At its height of 109 metres, 37 storeys, it would be the tallest building in Northern Ireland.
The development will contain almost 300 apartments and 7,000 square feet (700 m2) of commercial space. It is seen as a key regeneration project for the area, which has not experienced the same level of investment as the city centre, Cathedral Quarter or Laganside in recent years.

If completed, it will be 70 ft taller than the Obel Tower, which is due to be completed in 2010. The crown of tallest building on the island of Ireland would still be held by the approved U2 Tower in Dublin which is currently aiming for 130 or 180 metres.

According to BD Online, ‘Northern Ireland’s environment minister has slammed planning officials for rejecting proposals for Belfast’s tallest building.

Last week, designs by HKR Architects for the Aurora Building, a 37-storey, £90 million development in Great Victoria Street, were dismissed by the Northern Ireland Executive’s planning service for being too high and for paying insufficient attention to the character of the surrounding area.’ (…)
