Miami Marine Stadium Redevelopment Plans

Past // Miami Marine Stadium

These are plans for the restoration and reuse of Miami Marine Stadium. On April 28, 2009, the National Trust designated the Marine Stadium as one of ‘11 Endangered Historic Places’ in the United States. This extremely high level designation has focused national and international attention upon the Stadium. Video.

Present // Miami Marine Stadium

The Stadium was built in 1964, designed by architect Hilario Candela of the firm which is today called Spillis Candela DMJM. In its heyday, the Stadium hosted many events such as powerboat races, symphony and rock concerts, Easter services, presidential appearances and talk shows. The Stadium was closed after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and has been neglected and unoccupied ever since. Although there has been numerous talk of renovation, there has been no action.

The City of Miami is now developing a Master Plan for Virginia Key.

Future // Miami Marine Stadium

Students from the preservation program of the University of Miami School of Architecture will present the results of their study of the Marine Stadium basin; including uses of the stadium and land use alternatives for Virginia Key. The event will be at the Miami Rowing Club, Friday, May 8, from 10:00 AM-12:00.
