London Architecture Gallery Design Competition
ARQUITECTUM presents its 8th International Contest ‘LONDON 2008′. Exhibition hosted by the Architectural Association School of London.
The context of London, one of the most important historical cities of Europe and a melting pot of art and architecture as well as culture made this competition an attractive project for all design professionals to participate in.
//Theme
A movable architecture gallery, containing and distributing design to the city; travels across the River Thames to connect the various art spaces and collect visitors along the river; especially in the South Bank. The exhibition space should adapt to the movement of the river, to the different requirements of an exhibition and the artist, and to the weather in London; meaning summer and winter potentialities.

The convocatory for the contest was made in March 2008. The contest started in May and registrations were closed in July. The due date to present the digital projects was July 20th, 2008.
Arqitectum has received 347 projects from all around the world.

Some information from the winning designers:
‘hiDrone is an adaptable architecture gallery made of hydraulically operating pistons that are virtually and literally reconfigurable, filling and releasing water recycled from the Thames River. HiDrone has two states. When closed, it acts as a 3D screen. When open, it creates occupiable space. The piston operates distinctly at various scales ranging from display unit and furniture, all the way to enclosed, occupiable space. These pistons are pre-stressed with springs, which, when filled with water, assume a closed position. By controlling the amount of water released from the units, the volume of the object acquires different configurations.’
