‘Lange Jan and Lange Lies, the chimneys of the Oranje Nassau mine that were once part of Heerlen’s skyline, are getting a modern successor. The building, designed by Mecanoo Architecten, that will arise on the Burgemeester van Grunsvenplein will become the city’s new icon, forming the pinnacle of Heerlen’s future.
Dance
The loss of the mine has been incorporated in the design of the apartment towers. Lange Jan and Lange Lies, once Heerlen’s two tallest chimneys, dance together in this design on the city’s most important square, right next to the City Theater. Lange Jan and Lange Lies touch each other in their dance, so that the form of the building is reminiscent of a cooling tower. Where the two towers touch each other the elevator shaft of the one tower can change over to the other. This forms the basis for a lucid and logical lay-out for the floor plan: two types of apartments, which can be made larger or smaller by shifting the floor plan in relation to the elevator shaft. The height of the two towers is 108 meters (with 31 stories) and 90 meters (with 25 stories), which means that they will become the tallest buildings in the province of Limburg. ‘
