Green Office 2015 By RAU Architects
The following information is from RAU Architects:
‘Green Office 2015 is a close-knit tissue that is imposed on existing infrastructure; a web that links areas together, where working, living and leisure are all interwoven. Never before has the infrastructural footprint been activated on so many levels. Furthermore, use is made of advanced and innovative technologies, materials and concepts in the fields of health, energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and urban planning.
Green Office 2015 is the first urban ‘inpansion’ in the Netherlands to have such significant social value. The partners are able to activate an area measuring one square kilometer to seven times that. Where today, railways and roads only run, will in the future offer space for living, working, recreation, parking, generating energy, enjoying the park and for traveling by train. This is achieved by building a web over the infrastructure. This concept can be applied to all areas with infrastructure build-up. The basis, an energy-producing area with a bridge function, can be applied everywhere and ‘dressed up’ according to what the local circumstances and user demands require. Green Office 2015 is a multifunctional building that can perform to satisfaction for decades, functioning not only as office building but also as a hotel, for example, or a parking garage. It will be developed in accordance with the open building principle: the user determines both the layout and the content.
Enhancing Comfort
A number of innovative technologies and concepts designed to enhance the comfort level are immediately obvious. One example is the dynamic, fully demand-driven hybrid ventilation system, which treats outdoor air to achieve the desired indoor climate at the level of the individual workplace. The system establishes a basic climate in the core areas and, in the office areas, provides for a micro-climate that can be adjusted to individual needs. This is ideal when fresh air is desired, but opening windows leads to draft or noise nuisance from outside. Elements are integrated into the office furniture that are capable of producing the desired climate within minutes. The OLED illumination, too, is an extraordinary innovation: surface lighting that provides a more even light than point lighting, emits no heat and is suitable for numerous purposes, from workplace lighting to location exits.
Furthermore, sensor technology is applied so that e.g. office furniture, illumination and software can be adjusted as needed. Office users can log in everywhere, complete with digital photograph frames and a digital bulletin board which will appear in the workplace.
Energy concept
Green Office 2015 is an energy-generating environmentally friendly biotope that is focused on creating a healthy environment for its users. The energy concept is based on three tiers. In the first place, the energy requirement of the system is kept as low as possible. Besides a responsible use of insulation to promote a healthy indoor climate, sustainable behavior is stimulated and mixed functions ensure that the useful life is lengthened. The second tier involves retaining the energy available inside the system as much as possible. Users’ kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy, and sewage water and used paper are chemically converted into energy, following which they too are added to the energetic circulation of the complex. Any energy which may then still be ‘lacking’ is generated in the third tier in an environmentally friendly way, among others, by means of solar cells that are integrated into the building and small, noiseless wind turbines. The surrounding districts can thus also benefit from the energy generated by Green Office 2015. The refuse produced in Green Office 2015 is converted to biogas and returned to the energetic circulation of the biotope. Green Office 2015 is mainly constructed from steel, a material that can be easily melted down and reused for other products in the future.’
