Eli And Edythe Broad Art Museum // Michigan // USA // Zaha Hadid

This is the winning project by Zaha Hadid for the new Eli And Edythe Broad Art Museum in Michigan, USA. It will be constructed from steel and concrete with an aluminium and glass exterior. Groundbreaking for the museum was planned for fall 2008 and completion of the project is expected in 2010.

The following information about the competition is from the museum’s website:

//Design Competition

Michigan State University engaged renowned architect and architecture and design critic Joseph Giovannini to facilitate a competition to select the architectural firm to design the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. Initially, 10 semifinalist firms were identified from a field of approximately 30 firms. In June 2007, a screening committee selected five finalist firms to submit competition proposals. The finalists came to campus in July 2007 to present their concepts for the building to the university, the public and a jury.

//Design Goal

The charge to the architectural firms was to present a building design concept that would stand out from the traditional brick Gothic campus and serve as a symbol of the university’s trajectory into the future. At the same time, the development of the museum site was to honor the connection of old to new, incorporating mature specimen trees into a sculpture garden that will anchor the new building in its surroundings.

//Finalist Firms

The five finalist firms represented a mix of established firms and emerging talents. They were:

* Zaha Hadid (London)
* Coop Himmelb(l)au (Vienna/Los Angeles)
* Morphosis (Santa Monica)
* Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, PC (New York)
* Randall Stout Architects, Inc. (Los Angeles)
