David Tajchman’s Proposal For The ThyssenKrupp Elevator Competition

This is Architectures David Tajchman’s proposal for the ThyssenKrupp Elevator competition, located in the Zaabeel Park, Dubai.

Standing at 170 meters tall ‘Cloud City’ consists of a three level platform. The first level is the children’s library which is designed with inclined surfaces. At the second level are three auditoriums, which can be configured in various ways that rotate around the elevators axis. The upper floor is located above the auditorium is a panoramic restaurant also rotating 360 degrees.

‘Building architecture dedicated to hight is a long time tradition. A fast glance at the history of iconic constructions shows religious, technologic or engineering progressive monuments, with as a common ambition a will to reach the highest altitude.

Reaching 170 meters high will probably not make this new emblem the highest building in Dubai, but the fast comparison of world famous tall icons shows that size is not a major point to make an emblem.

Context, meaning and evocation are without any doubt more important to support the emblematic idea.

A tall emblem in Dubai is to be distinguishable in the skyline of towers set along the strip, situation comparable to Las Vegas, city built in the middle of a desert where every building is a world itself.

This search for singularity expresses itself otherwise than in a tower shape; here the idea of ascension is expressed with the fineness of a structure corresponding to elevators size, and platform located among clouds.’ (…)
