Construction To Begin On London 2012 Basketball Arena
Design proposals for the temporary London 2012 Basketball Arena, the third largest venue on the Park, have gained planning permission.
Sinclair Knight Merz, Wilkinson Eyre and KSS Design Group created the concept designs which were agreed in June 2008 and the planning application was submitted in November. Last week the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Planning Committee resolved to approve the application subject to referral to the Government Office for London.
During the Olympic Games the 12,000-seat Arena will host the Basketball preliminaries and quarter-finals, as well as Handball semi-finals and finals. The venue will be used for Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby during the Paralympic Games.
Basketball Arena Project Sponsor Paul Snoddy said: ‘The Arena will be one of the largest temporary venues built for any Games and will provide a great experience for spectators and athletes.
‘After the Games, two thirds of the materials and elements of the Arena can be reused or recycled, potentially allowing other parts of the UK to benefit from London 2012.’
Building work on the Arena will finish in time for Test Events before the Games.
Design
During the Olympic Games the Basketball Arena will have 12,000 seats for the Basketball preliminary games and quarter-finals, as well as the Handball semi-finals and finals. During the Paralympic Games it will have a capacity of 10,000 seats for Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby.
The Arena will be one of the largest temporary venues built for any Games. It will be taken down after the Games because there is no long-term need for a venue of this capacity in east London, given the other new permanent venues that will remain in the Park after 2012. These include the Handball Arena, which will become a multi-use indoor sports centre.
Location
The Arena was originally located in the west of the Olympic Park just north-west of the Olympic Stadium. Earlier this year, its location was changed to the former site of the Fencing Hall, in the north of the Park, after Olympic Fencing, Wheelchair Fencing and Paralympic Judo were moved to the ExCeL venue in Docklands. The change will provide more space for spectators to enjoy the Park and maximise the use of existing venues.
Access and inclusion
The Basketball Arena has been designed so that both spectators and athletes can enjoy the facilities equally, regardless of disability, age, ethnicity, gender, or faith. For example, the Arena will feature step-free access for spectators, athletes and support staff. Accessible seating will be positioned to provide fantastic views for all events.
Sustainability
The Basketball Arena will be taken down after the Games. The current designs allow for over two thirds of the materials and elements of the Arena to be reused or recycled elsewhere.
Transport
Most spectators will get to the Basketball Arena through one of the three ‘gateway’ stations – Stratford Regional, Stratford International and West Ham.
Spectators will also be able to use a number of walking and cycle routes to reach the Arena.
